Welcome to the
Minnesota Smith Club Web site!
Our 2008 annual meeting on April 12 was
wonderful. Sherrill Redmon, head of the Sophia Smith collection at Smith
described for us what is an internationally recognized repository for the
historical experience of women. It documents the lives of individual
women and families and the work of organizations whose focus is women and
women’s issues through letters, diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, minutes,
reports, publications, and oral histories—9,500 linear feet of material!
Sherrill’s presentation, “Creating Women’s History: the Sophia Smith
Collection” was fascinating and made us realize that here was another great
resource at Smith that most of us failed to explore. (But it’s not too late!
The collection is open to everyone.)
We’re looking forward to an
especially grand Smith Day 2008 because it’s our 75th anniversary. Please join
us for the Diamond Jubilee on
Saturday, September 6. See the Smith Day page for more details. And don’t
forget to volunteer and donate merchandise now.
On Sunday, November 2, President
Carol Christ will join us in Minneapolis for a celebration of the inaugural
year of our Oral History Project. A busy committee and cadre of interviewers
have been planning and recording the history of 16 distinguished alumnae from
our area for months. The result of their work will be a stunning book of these
histories, complete with pictures, which will debut at this special event. Put
it on your calendar!
If you’re new to the area, visit our Officers page and please
be in touch. Our club is large, active, and most important, lots of fun. We
look forward to welcoming you.
